SAARLAND
CELTS, CABBAGES AND MINERS
A journey through the cultural history of the Saarland that makes history come to
life. Ancient remains lie in our path as well as an old steelworks, which has been made a World Cultural Heritage site. Try local specialities, traditional beers and
schnapps, and learn interesting things about the lives of Celtic princesses and Saarland miners.
An experienced steelworks guide will show us the connections between
technology and daily life. We will enter a technological world rarely seen otherwise.
Alternatively, we can visit a coal mine with a tunnel system over one kilometre
long. In this visit, you will learn about the world of mining as it was one hundred years ago.
Objects of more than 6000 years’ history have been brought to light in the course of excavations in the Saarland. We will watch over the
shoulders of archaeologists at work and explore the remains of a palatial Roman villa – part of a Gallo-Roman town - and we will learn
about trade and handicrafts in ancient times. A highlight here is the reconstruction of a Gallic necropolis and a meeting with a Celtic ‘contemporary witness’, who will give us a view of the world 2500 years ago.
Try dining in a cryp, or enjoy a Roman menu in the midst of an archaeological excavation. An exclusive evening in a fortress of the 11th
century is also in the programme.
