WÜRZBURG

HISTORIC WÜRZBURG

Take a journey of discovery through the fascinating history of this city on the Main river. You will get to know the fortress of the Marienberg, dominating the town, and the Neumünster (New Minster) with its Lusamgärtlein, the little Lusam garden, the last resting place of the most famous of mediaeval German troubadours, Walther von der Vogelweide, whose songs will be played and sung to you by appropriately costumed bards.

But the ‘dark’ side of history will not be left out of our tour of discovery. You will learn everything there is to know about the Würzburg witch trials from a ‘witch’ herself. These were among the largest persecutions to take place on German soil, with more than 900 victims.

And during an exclusive tour of the former residence of the prince bishops, chosen by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, you will hear interesting details of life at court.

Dine where illustrious persons of the past such as Emperor Wilhelm I or the ‘fairytale king’ Ludwig II of Bavaria gave receptions. The most beautiful masonry Winecellar in Franconia, indeed, one of the architecturally most impressive wine cellars of the world, forms the background for an unforgettable evening. In these magnificently illuminated vaults, in the midst of over 300 old wooden vats, we will test the wines of the traditional winery, whose origins go back to the 12th century.
